I photograph things at the point where they stop being just pretty and start being something else.

That point is usually a little late. A flower four days past its best. A face in the second after it forgets something more than the camera. I came to this from biochemistry, and I think it taught me more than I realised. You learn early that nothing is decaying, exactly. It's just doing something else now, and nobody is looking at that part.

The objects and the portraits are not two bodies of work. They are one kind of attention, from two different angles. The same interest in the edges of things, in the moment just after or just before the one that would have felt right.

Usually I build before I find. Sometimes the other way round. It might mean setting the story, building the world or making an object that only ever exists for one picture. Or borrowing a room and changing it until it stops looking like itself. It can be slow, and it is the part I like most.

What I am after is a picture that feels like a still from something longer. The suggestion of what has already happened, maybe a little wrong. The ones I love the most are the ones that still don't quite settle for me either.
